PROGRAM: 08/13: Denton Community Market — The Denton Community Market is a vibrant, producer-only art and farmers market in the heart of Denton, Texas. Open seasonally on Saturdays, the market features local farmers, artisans, food vendors, and live entertainment, creating a welcoming space where residents can shop fresh, handmade, and locally grown products. More than just a marketplace, it serves as a community hub that supports small businesses, promotes healthy living, and celebrates Denton’s creative spirit.
Program : 08/06:Denton County Homeless Coalition — presented by Elena Shehan
Elena shared how the coalition works to reduce homelessness in Denton County through data collection, targeted outreach, and supportive services. Volunteers conduct an annual Point-in-Time (PIT) count each January to gather insights on causes of homelessness, demographics, and living conditions.
Based on the findings, the coalition focuses on:
Advocacy for affordable housing
Transportation assistance (bus passes to work or shelters)
ID replacement support
Bed purchases and household setup for those transitioning to permanent housing
These efforts are supported by the Barriers Fund, which provides up to $1,000 per person. Since its inception, the fund has assisted 621 residents, averaging $763 per recipient.

Program: Building a Second Career
Speaker:Mark Fleitman, Denton Breakfast Kiwanis Member
When the scheduled speaker could not attend, member Mark Fleitman stepped up to share his personal journey from project management to property management.
In 2019, Fleitman’s role at Sally Beauty was eliminated due to a reorganization—a change he described as “a shock to my system.” While job searching, he encountered age and demographic biases. Recognizing his strengths in working with people, he pivoted to property management, launching PMI United.
Within six years, he now manages 88 properties across North Texas. His journey included:
Licensing & Startup: Obtained real estate license in June 2019, acquired first property in February 2020.
Financial Challenges: Invested retirement savings to start the business.
Operations: Personally handled many repairs, learning as he went. Major expenses include A/C systems, dishwashers, and disposals.
Industry Insight: Significant investment from out-of-state and international buyers, with funds coming from places like India, New York, Alabama, and New Jersey.
Fleitman emphasized that property management is about connecting owners who want to rent their properties with tenants, while ensuring the process runs smoothly.
